AX 2011: NIS America Panel

NIS America held its first anime-related panel on Day 1 of Anime Expo 2011 and what they revealed for the upcoming year’s lineup is nothing short of impressive. A year has passed since NIS America, initially well-known for developing video games such as the beloved Disgaea series, also included anime in their product lineup but as the company’s Anime Director mentioned, what they didn’t supply in quantity they more than made up for in quality.

As you can see from our reviews for Wagnaria!!, Toradora as well as Persona – Trinity Soul, this is very true so you can see we were more than enthusiastic by their announcements as well as two Breaking News items fans will definitely love. So let’s get right to it.

Arakawa Under the Bridge, Premium EditionJuly 5, 2011 – $55.98 – 13-episodes on 2 DVDs, 2 Blu-ray disc sets as well as Premium box and a hardcover art book. Our Thoughts: We got a good look at a preview and the trailer and already think it’s a refreshingly surreal and hilarious series well worth checkout out. I mean, who wouldn’t love a series with a girl who says she’s from another planet who hangs out with a Kappa and a Rock Star (emphasis on “star”).

Katanagatari, Volume 1July 2011 – $55.98 – A 6-episode series on 2 DVDs/2 Blu-rays disc sets premium box and a 30+ page hardcover art book. Our Thoughts: The animation looks beautiful and unique and the story (which contains historical and romantic elements) works for us.

Katanagatari, Volume 2 – A Spring 2012 release date was announced.

NIS America also took this time to make two announcements of two acquisitions that will be released sometime this year.

Dororon Emma-kun – That’s right, NIS America will bring us this awesome series and while no other details were disclosed this is going to be a great series to check out if you’re not familiar with the Demon Patrol.

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to YouOctober 2011 – If you’ve been following our reviews of the VIZ Media manga, you know we have a soft spot for this series of a girl who everyone was afraid to talk to until a cute boy decided to befriend her.

FINAL THOUGHTS: NIS America has had an interesting year in an industry with heavy-hitting competitors but – as anime fans – we are glad that NIS America is adding refreshing new anime to their product lineup. As the panelists mentioned, sure their releases are pricey but they make sure they put out quality releases that separate them from other companies.

Oh, and in case you wanted to see what the panelists look like, check this out:
